A Journey Through Art and Identity
Mayuri Chari completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Goa College of Art (2013) and her Master’s in Painting from SN School of Art, Hyderabad Central University (2017). Deeply influenced by the statement, “A woman is not born, she is created,” Chari reflects on the dichotomy of societal perceptions of women — revered as goddesses or reduced to objects of consumption.
Through her work, Chari argues for equal treatment of women as individuals. She highlights how societal values and manners, while ostensibly universal, are often burdened by an extra set of expectations designed specifically for women — rules meant to control, judge, and question them at every step.
Chari’s art is deeply rooted in the lived experiences of women, often incorporating objects and mediums that symbolize their daily lives. Self-written poems and statements are embroidered onto cloth, while pillows, cow dung, curtains, threads, and other everyday items become powerful symbols of the unacknowledged labor and complex realities of women. Her use of these materials bridges the gap between traditional craft and contemporary art, creating poignant narratives of female representation and leadership.
Chari’s talent has earned her significant recognition. She was recently chosen as the Artist in Residence for India Art Fair 2024 and participated in the Young Collectors Program at the 2025 edition of the India Art Fair. These accolades affirm her as a vital voice in the contemporary art world, where her work continues to inspire and challenge.
